Health Informatics

This course aims to increase the understanding and basic skills in learning and utilization of supporting facilities at UGM, especially at the Faculty of Medicine. Students will have a basic competence in the use of supporting facilities, especially information and communications technologies. Students will be taught individually or in groups on the theory and practice either in the classroom or laboratory. Some subjects, such as biostatistics and epidemiology will rely on the use of information and communication technologies, particularly in obtaining lecture materials, assignment, discussion and report the results of student work to lecturers and assistant of the course.

This course will give opportunity to students for learning social behavior science theories and topics related to new public health paradigm. There has been a shift in public health education for the last decade. In the past, public health science was learned by doctor who worked in government and community as an effort of prevention action such as immunization and community health education. Previous public health science more focus in developing ways to encourage community to take initiation for prevention through personal and family life to avoid disease. To date, public health science has been wider and deeper. Health services organization, workforce and client target started to be learned, in addition to public private issues, rich and poor population, industrialization and corporation in health services and educations, and the progress of health promotion strategies.

The discussion of course topics including four levels of health, illness and disease determinants:  individual, family, social structure and culture. Students will also be introduced with global and international health, comprising climate changes, disaster and bioterrorism. Indeed, students will learn SDG/Sustainable Development Goals, triple burden of disease and Non Communicable Disease Prevention.     

The teaching learning approach in this course is more dialogue than didactic on social behavior that containing health sociology, anthropology and behavior sciences. Focus of the topics concerning on delivery of health care in health services, decision on health management and policy, health system and social epidemiology, new health promotion strategy, as well as social problem in health (function, conflict and interaction), cause of disease from the perspective of social and culture, medical pluralism, role of doctors and health provider as social control,  gender, behavioral changes, social capital and social determinants.

This course topics will also consists of social behavior science in public health related to the majoring in Graduate program on Public Health of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Gadjah Mada (GPPH FM UGM). GPPH FM UGM has twelve majoring public health, i.e. 1) health behavior and promotion, 2) maternal and child health, 3) field epidemiology, 4) nutrition, 5) international health,  6) environmental health, 7) occupational health, 8) health management and policy, 9) hospital management, 10) drug and policy management, 11) health finance and insurance management, and 12) health information system management. Therefore, issues of health social and behavioral related to all those public health branches will be discussed in each of majoring. Although some of students have experience working in public health areas, they less comprehend on social behavioral issues related to health.
